about

Ex Machina
track recorded ca. 1989-1991 using a 4-track cassette recorder; remixed 2017

Ex Machina (my eighth LP) consists of a single 37-minute track, “Ex Machina (Redux)” constructed from the 80-second track that opens my second LP (“Ex Machina” from Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose). The original track was recorded using only an electric guitar and effects rack with which a short loop was made using a repeater. From the original short input a longer ascending and descending melody was spontaneously generated by the resulting feedback, hence the title “Ex Machina” for the track. For “Ex Machina (Redux)” a digital audio file of the the original analog track was slowed approximately 800 percent, then reversed as well with the two resulting pieces edited together. Additional effects were added also, although the only instrument remains the electric guitar.

The cover is a photograph taken on my farm in North Carolina on June 6, 2017. A high-quality video of the track featuring the entire photo (a panorama shot) is available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcB4Ebjq9ts
